How to prepare your files for online transfer

Updated: Feb 21, 2022

Online file transfer these days should be flawless... if you have a few rules in mind.

Keep it simple and straight and you 'll be there in no time.

Here is a small list of things to keep in mind.

Tip #1a - Ideal file export (for mixing):

When you work in another studio or at home, sending the whole project folder to your mixer, is generally not ideal.

Third party plugins, different daws and OS, unnecessary large projects, different instruments etc etc

The best way is to export your tracks in .wav or .aiff starting from the BEGGINING of the project with all processing off (compressor, eq, reverbs, delays, master buss processors, panning etc).

Always check that no individual track is peaking over -3dBFs.

Please keep the names simple and clear (eg AC GTR SOLO or KICK IN, SNARE TOP etc)

Ideally on the folder you have your exported files, note the bpm of the song and the sample rate/bit depth.

Tip #1b - Ideal file export (for mastering):

The same things apply for mastering too.

Check your mix is not peaking over -6dBFs and that any buss processing is off.

If you have a mix buss processing that you like, send us two versions (one with and one without your processing).

Tip #2 - Choose the cloud transfer service of your choice

All mainstream cloud storage services nowadays are pretty straight forward to use.

Sending files with wetransfer.com for example is pretty easy.

  • Go to wetransfer.com

  • Drag and drop your files or folders (up to 2GB for free accounts)

  • Fill the "Email to" field with templestudiorecords@gmail.com (if you are sending files to us for online editing, mixing or mastering services)

  • Enter your email at the "Your email" field

  • The field "title" will autofill once you have put your files in but you can change it if you like

  • Write a message if you have anything to note

  • Press "Transfer"

  • Done!

Once it is uploaded, you will receive a confirmation email.

You will also receive another confirmation email when we download your files.

That was it!

Tip #3 - Communication

Once everything is ok and we have your files, the important part begins (and no it is not mixing or mastering).

Now it is the time to talk about your project and what is your final goal soundwise.

Of course we can work things on our own but our passion is to find out together what sound imprint you want your music to leave.

There is really no right and wrong in sound.

Well, there are technical things for us to keep in mind, but rules are to be broken.

Tip #4 - Result evaluation

Once we have come to a somehow complete result, it is time for you to listen and evaluate.

Here are a couple of things to consider:

  • Listen to the same environment you are familiar with (even if it headphones or your car)

  • Try to be as clear as you can with your notes. Most of the times people want something else and use the "wrong" words to describe it

  • Understand that we are your aliases. I know it sometimes seems that other people can't understand you but we are not those people. We are PASSIONED to find exactly what you want and make it happen.

Tip #5 - That was all folks!

Nothing more to add. We believe it was really simple and straight forward.

However, if you have any questions or you are not yet familiar with any of the steps, just email, chat, call us and we will figure it out!
